Nvidia and AMD respond to GPU card shortages

Foreign media TheVerge reported that Nvidia’s new RTX3080, 3070, 3060Ti and 3090 and AMDRX6800 and 6800XT are very difficult to buy, and will be sold out instantly as soon as they appear. Due to the incredible demand, these GPU cards are worth more than the manufacturer’s recommendations The retail price is hundreds of dollars higher. Many older graphics cards have also been sold out online.

This week, Nvidia and AMD finally have some updates, but this is bittersweet news.

On the bright side, AMD said that it expects to sell more public reference design RX6800, 6800XT and RX6900XT graphics cards on its website in the first quarter of 2021, and sell them at the official original price, which should mean staying at 579. US dollars, 649 dollars and 999 dollars. But AMD only promises that "as many gamers as possible" can get them, but it is expected that it will be difficult to satisfy all buyers.

Nvidia said that the supply of its GPU graphics cards to consumers and partners "still needs to wait until the first quarter"-the first quarter of Nvidia's fiscal year has not ended until the end of April. This is a very long wait.

There is also a large amount of demand, not just supply constraints, so that graphics cards cannot satisfy most people. Nvidia claims that since its launch, sales of its RTX30 series GPU cards of $499 and above have almost doubled the sales of the RTX20 series in the same time period. (The RTX30 series has a larger upgrade rate than the previous generation. You must know that there were not many games using Nvidia ray tracing at that time, and the GTX10 series graphics cards could still maintain very well.

Nvidia seems to think that crypto miners have not snapped up all the graphics cards, although we have recently seen the skyrocketing price of Bitcoin.

NvidiaCFOColetteKress said at a recent investor conference, “We can also use this opportunity to restart the CMP product line to solve the continuing mining demand.” CMP refers to Nvidia’s dedicated cryptographic mining GPU graphics card, which strips miners away. The video ports are needed because they are not connecting the graphics driver to the display, which makes them more profitable for Nvidia.

So far, only Asus has admitted that the price of GPU graphics cards has increased, and the prices are higher.

AMD CEO LisaSu claimed that the company is trying its best to keep prices down.

"We are committed to keeping the price of GPU graphics cards as close to the suggested retail price as possible, because only in this way can we be fair to users. Usually when we have graphics cards on the market, our own brand graphics cards will be available at the beginning, but then gradually disappear , Let our partners take over. This time we did not eliminate the RX6000 series, so that we can sell directly to users at the lowest possible price. We encourage partners to do the same. Not only tariffs, but also the increased transportation costs under the COVID epidemic environment It is also unavoidable. As we enter a more normal environment, this situation should improve. This is also important for the graphics card update we plan in the first half of this year, because we have many products to market."

This sounds good, but it's still pretty uncertain-it feels like AMD told HardwareUnboxed last November that how partners should be able to sell the RX6800XT graphics card at its original retail price of $649 in eight weeks is an important step.
